World Wildlife Fund and 9/11 Ad

WWF 9/11 Ad
WWF strongly condemns this offensive and tasteless ad and did not authorize its production or publication. It is our understanding that it was a concept offered by an outside advertising agency seeking our business in Brazil.

The WWF did not approve this ad, but it is still a striking image. It’s the kind of thing that often wins awards in the ad world, and this ad won an award for excellence in advertising from The One Club. The caption on the image says-The tsunami killed 100 times more people than 9/11.

September 11, 2001 was almost 8 years ago. Just another date on the calendar, another day to open movies. A bit of history that those of us not directly effected don’t give much thought to. But it is our Kennedy Assassination, our shared moment of shock and rage.

Which makes it the perfect fodder for a shock ad. It is no secret that the rest of the world is not all that fond of America. 9/11 has been used for political purposes, with people comparing the number of 9/11 dead with the number of Iraqi dead and asking when America will have enough blood on it’s hands to satisfy it’s need for revenge.

The Red Cross was pretty much ruined by 9/11. Between the waste of donated blood and the shifting of 9/11 monies to the general fund, The Red Cross came out looking like a bunch of greedy idiots. So here we have 9/11 attacking another charitable organization-The World Wildlife Fund. The ad makes it’s point, as Americans we care a hell of a lot more about 9/11 than we do about something that happened on the other side of the world.

But we also don’t trust anyone. How can we know that any money given to any group will go where we want it to go? Maybe I want to help tsunami victims, but the WWF wants to save some rain forest? How can we know that our donations will not be flat out wasted? We can’t.

But at least the WWF doesn’t have to worry about being confused with Pro Wrestling anymore.

See The L.A.Times for more info on the ad and the World Wildlife Fund.

It’s indeed a shame. The picture is very haunting, and yes we are hated by many around the world.

    Have a terrific day. :)
