I live in the great state of Texas and there has been a bit of hubbub recently about a series of tickets written by the Dallas Police Dept for being Non-English Speaking Drivers-which is against the law for Truckers. But these were not Truckers that were given tickets for being Non-English Speaking Drivers, they were just garden variety Mexicans who can’t be bothered to learn English.
The woman that got the main attention in this media case has been in America for something like 16 years-and still only speaks Spanish. Once upon a time moving to another country meant you had to learn a new language-but not anymore. There are dozens of Tv Stations, Newspapers, Radio Stations, and signs of all kinds in languages other than English. Our local library only wants to hire people who speak both English and Spanish. I’m sure it won’t be long before the English requirement is dropped.
Terms like Wetbacks and Illegals are not as common as they once were-it’s not nice to be mean to criminals in these political climates. And they are illegal aliens for the most part, just waiting around for the next round of Pardons from the next feel good President that wants to grant U.S. Citizenship to everyone born in North, South, and Central America-soon to expand to the rest of the world.
All of us old timers-anyone over say 25-finds the idea of an America filled with every language under the sun slightly offensive and more than a bit scary. I don’t want to find myself in my own country and not able to understand the street signs, the waiters, the Government workers-because they all speak whatever language they want to speak and find me odd for insisting on speaking that archaic tongue of English.
Not that there is anything new in this, Conquers always impose their own language on the native population, but at least in the good old days the invaders had the courtesy to declare formal articles of war and you could kill the bastards in open combat. The modern invaders know they are above the law and untouchable-America welcomes the invaders to cut our grass and man the counter of our motels and convenience stores.
I think there should be a law against being an Non-English Speaking Driver, but there isn’t one, so that is that. Now I am not against anyone and everyone moving to America. I love Mexican food, Chinese food, Italian food, and well, just about all foods, except Indian foods-flavored sands and muds have never appealed to me.
I want everyone to bring their foods, and styles, and intelligences, to America-but I want them to learn to speak English once they are here. It seems that once upon a time it was required for Citizenship, and maybe it still is. Too many of the Non-English Speaking Drivers around here are citizens of Mexico-I still wouldn’t care, if only they would learn to speak English.
