Obama Won The Nobel Peace Prize-Get Over It

noble_medals

Congratulations, President Obama. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five Nobel Prizes bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel.В  The Nobel Committee hands out this Prize to whoever they feel like handing it out to.В  Barrack Obama won for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples-or so says the Noble Committee.

I have yet to meet anyone who has said-Wow, it’s about time Barrack Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize. One person greeted me with “Can you believe they gave that —— the Peace Prize?” I’ve also heard it called The Anti-Bush Prize, and if I had a prize to give Obama for not being that —- —- George Bush I would give it to him as well.

It could easily be argued, and many have, that the Nobel Peace Prize became meaningless once it was given to Jimmy Carter and totally pointless once it was given to Al Gore. The list of Nobel Prize laureates is filled with people most of us have never heard of, and in a hundred years Barrack Obama may well be among the forgotten winners.

Like everyone else I was surprised to hear that President Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, but in the greater scheme of things, my main response was-so what? President Barrack Obama won the Noble Peace Prize-it sounds a little better every time I say it.

A common complaint I’ve heard is that Give Em Hell Ronnie Reagan didn’t win the Nobel Peace Prize-well, duh. Warmonger Ronald Reagan’s if you don’t play ball we’ll nuke your ass politics were hardly the stuff of peace maker legends. But Ronnie was the last Republican anyone can mention with a straight face as being a great President. I have never believed that Reagan caused the fall of The Soviet Union, seems that really bad leadership and poorly executed Communism caused the fall of The Soviet Union.

Ok, Barrack Obama is no Ronald Reagan, just thank God he’s no George Bush, either.

I think Barrack Obama should be proud to have won the Nobel Peace Prize. I think he should wear it around his neck whenever he appears in public and when someone criticizes him-then he can point at it and say-Did you win a Nobel Peace Prize? I didn’t think so.

Some people began to suspect the peace price wasn’t really quite that back when Yassar Arafat won it. But, like you say, they can give it to whomever they choose to give it to, and I like the idea of Obama getting it better than, say, the North Korea guy.

That aside, it has always struck me as paradoxical that the guy who invented the stuff that helped countries blow each other up better left part of his fortune for a peace prize. Go figure. Glad he did, though.

Yes, too bad America does have a Trinity Peace Prize for having invented the Atom Bomb.

About the only thing I find surprising about President Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize is how many people were surprised by it. Hmm…or maybe “stunned” would be more like it.

After I watched the live televised coverage of his speech at Cairo University where he addressed the Muslim world in June, I told my husband, “That speech just won him a Nobel.”

So, I guess maybe I was the only person on the face of the Earth who wasn’t surprised–I mean, whodathunkit!? ;)

Actually, he invented the peace prize (and other prizes) because he hated what his invention had come to mean (war and violence). The original invention of dynamite was supposed to be used in Mining, and it was to cut down on labor and people dying inside of the mines. He never thought it could be used for war.

Out of guilt, he created the Nobel prizes.
