Bejeweled Twist

PopCap has sold more than 25 million Bejeweled games, with over 350 million copies downloaded, making it one of the most successful game franchises in history.-Amazon

One of my favorite computer games is Bejeweled 2, which is an upgrade of Bejeweled. The latest in the family of Tetris like games is Bejeweled Twist. The big addition to Bejeweled 2 was the Hypercube, which removed all like colored jewels when used. The five jewel combo on Bejeweled Twist gets rid of the horizontal and vertical rows when activated.

This new version of Bejeweled is hard. Or maybe I am just getting old. In Bejeweled 2 in the Classic mode games would end when you ran out of moves, but I always play the Action mode where you run out of time. In Bejeweled Twist the Classic games I have played end when I have failed to detonate the mines that appear with growing frequency as the game progresses. You do get a second chance to keep playing, as there is a roulette wheel that might disarm the bomb.

As with any new game play it take a while to get used to spinning the jewels instead of shifting them. With Bejeweled Twist you move four jewels at a time. Until one of them becomes locked and won’t twist anymore. There are also rocks which are just inert pieces in the game which can still be moved but can’t be removed by lining them up. There are the usual suspects of things that blow up with a four gem combo and a five gem combo and there seem to be a lot more Excellents and Awesomes than in Bejeweled 2.

Bejeweled Twist features four different play modes: Classic, Challenge, Zen and Blitz. Classic mode lets you progress through increasingly difficult levels where you try to create jewel chains before a bomb detonates. Challenge mode creates specific tasks for you to complete, such as destroying ten gems in one move. In Blitz mode, you frantically try to accumulate as many points as you can within a certain amount of time. And in Zen mode, you can play a relaxing game without any obstacles or timers.

Bejeweled Twist is a great game and so far I have found it to be just as addictive as the other Bejeweleds. I can add one item to my list of time sinks.

  1. There was an episode of Angel where a God started playing a video game and said that it served no useful purposed and she felt oddly compelled to keep playing. It’s kind of like that.
