Dallas Cowboys Rant

Rams 30, Cowboys 22.

I remember the days of Roger Staubach, Too Tall Jones, and Hollywood Henderson. Those Cowboys went to the Superbowl on a regular basis. The great Danny White took the team to three NFC Conference Games. Things went downhill from there, but even during the last few years of Tom Landry’s reign, his teams still often lost by a field goal or less. There was always hope that they could make one more play.

Then there was the Jimmy Johnson juggernaut whose game plan was to score 40 points in the first half and protect the lead. Then came the dark times. Barry Switzer lost one Super Bowl and won another, but he will never get any credit for the win, since it was Jimmy’s team.

A string of uninspired Head Coaches followed. There was a brief ray of hope when Bill Parcels stopped by for a few years, but his time here ended in heartbreak as well.

Then there is Jason Garrett. A former Cowboys Quarterback who had one great game as a player and a handful of great games as a Head Coach. His public persona is calm, boring, unimaginative, and always positive. His coaching style is much the same.

Garrett may well be the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys until Jerry Jones dies.

I don’t watch as much football as I did in the old days. This season I was one of the fans ready to write them off when they were 3-5. Fans were calling for Garrett’s head, saying that Dak was shell shocked and couldn’t play if he was pressured even a tiny bit, and maybe it was time to think about drafting another Quarterback. Jerry Jones’s great weakness is his loyalty. Once he decides he loves you, you’re his man til something drastic happens.

The Dallas Cowboys are the world’s most valuable sports franchise, according to an annual list complied by Forbes Magazine. The Cowboys are worth $4.8 billion. So there is no reason for businessman Jerry Jones to care if the teams ever wins another Superbowl.

The loss to the L.A. Rams in the second round of the playoffs wasn’t much of a heartache, no one really expected them to win.
