Eat Street

eat street The ManBQue Guide to Making Street Food at Home

Any fan of Anthony Bourdain or Andrew Zimmern knows that the best food to be had is street food. The good folks at Manbque know this as well. I had never heard of Manbque, but that didn’t stop me from reading their cookbook.

I’m a bit of a cookbook junkie. I pick up just about every one I run across and flip through the pages. As a photographer I look at the photos, as a foodie I check out the recipes. Both are pretty good.

I like the writing style used in Eat Street. Casual and fun. The directions are simple and to the point. The first recipe I tried from this collection was Bacon Lime Fried Rice. The recipes are grouped under what tool you use to cook it, and this one was listed under Wok. Wok and Cauldron are the two smallest sections, which is a pity. I’m more of a wok man than a barbecuer these days. I also like booking things in large pots, such as batches of Bone Broth. Anyway, the Fried Rice was damned good and I have my eye on a few other recipes to try.

For me, any cookbook that gets me to actually cook at least one recipe is a winner. Like countless other armchair Chefs, I like looking at the pictures, but seldom build up enough energy to cook something new.

Other chapters in the book include Hot Dogs, Pans, Fire, Fryer, and Oven, as well as a few other odd topics. One of the slightly odd recipes calls for making coffee with a French Press by using stout instead of water. Buzz Beer!

Another chapter is all about sauces. They end the book by listing a number of songs they think should be blasting while you do various life-threatening activities.

Their guacamole recipe is clearly written by a bunch of Yankees. It’s a basic guac recipe, except it has no jalapenos or serranos or any spice at all. So if you make their guacamole, just add a diced jalapeno or serrano and you’ll be good to go.
