JJ Abrams Star Trek Trailer 2

I’m glad to see the Old Uniforms, but a bit surprised to see the New Ships in JJ Abrams Star Trek. I guess he wants just a touch of that Original Star Trek feel and not all of those clunky 1960s props and special effects. There do seem to be a few old sound effects as well. While it might seem silly to have old style toggle switches everywhere and big bright colored buttons-Battlestar Galactica seems get away with it.

The lure of technology is way too strong for there to ever be a real Star Trek Movie again. Just as the original Star Wars was better on every level than the last Star Wars movie, it is hard to imagine that JJ Abrams Star Trek will be better than say, The Wrath of Khan. The Wrath of Khan was basically a long episode of Star Trek, but there were also the seeds of things to come being planted. The Wrath of Khan had a lot of special effects-a long more than any episode of Star Trek ever had.

So yeah, this Star Trek Trailer 2 looks good, but it doesn’t look like Star Trek. The whole lure of the Original Series was that they didn’t have any money for props and special effects, so they had to do something unthinkable-use good writing to make the show worth watching. Star Trek was like The Twilight Zone-full of aliens and other worlds and cyberpunk before anyone even knew what cyberpunk was-and it wasn’t overloaded with special effects.

The idea here may be that JJ Abrams will reload Star Trek the way The Dark Knight reloaded Batman. The difference, of course, is that Batman was always dark and gritty and The Dark Knight was just true to the original story. The original Star Trek was about right and wrong, good and evil, the right choice and the wrong choice. Kirk always knew that he was right, even when he was wrong. There were questions of morality and justice and racism and hatred. They were often over the top, but they were still good.

The Star Trek Movie website is pretty cool. Though I feel like I’m in the Tube in London and not on board the Starship Entreprise. When did they start using all those rounded corridors anyway? I am looking forward to JJ Abrams Star Trek, but it’s hard not to want to be more like Star Trek. I hated Charile and The Chocolate Factory because it wasn’t Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. I couldn’t see any good in Johnny Depp because he wasn’t Gene Wilder. I am willing to accept the new cast, but I want to see the Real Starship Entreprise.

But hey, any New Star Trek is good Star Trek.
