Juicy Campus-Gossip and Slagging

slagging-criticism: a series of insulting, mocking, or critical comments.

Juicycampus is a site for college kids to talk about one another. Hey, I thought that’s what Facebook was for. The idea here being that the more juicy the gossip, the better. There are topics like what is the funniest website, but the Juicy Campus posts that get the Most Viewed status are the ones talking about the Hottest Guys and Hottest Gals and Sluttiest Girls in Name-Your-College.

The draw for the site is that it is supposed to be totally anonymous to post to it. But the anonymous posters can still name names in their Juicy Campus posts.

Sky.com has an interesting take the JuciyCampus craze, they says that U.K. kids would never do such a thing. It is good to share info, but not spread juicy gossip that does no one any good. Slagging, by the way, is U.K. term. I agree that this can’t be a good thing, but I am not sure it is purely American to want to bitch and moan about your fellow man- or woman as the case may be.

This is one more case like Facebook’s 30 reasons a girl should call it a night, where these people seem to think they can say whatever they want without worrying about consequences. Hey, it’s just a website, dude! So what’s all the fuss is about? It’s just fun to call someone the biggest slut at Baylor.

Cornell has several stories in their newspaper about how Juicy Campus is not a good thing. Juicy Campus has been banned by the Student Government Association of Pepperdine University and I can see where it might be banned elsewhere.

But how do enforce a ban on a website? Maybe we should just rely on the common sense of our college students to do the right thing. Oh, right.
