The Big Texan

Free 72 oz. Steak proclaims billboards for hundreds of miles on every road leading to Amarillo, Texas.  The Big Texan is an old style tourist trap-a place with a gimmick and a ton of odds and ends for sale.  In addition to a large dinning room reminiscence of Gunsmoke’s Long Branch, there is a pretty large gift shop filled with all manner of western themed items.  Among the more interesting things was a series of mugs in the shape of rattlesnakes, one of them just like the one Craig Ferguson has on his desk on the Late, Late Show. Cadillac Ranch

About eight miles west of Amarillo, clearly visible from I-40, is a sculpture composed of ten old Cadillacs half buried in the middle of a plowed field.  This is art in the loosest possible sense of the word.  Uncontrolled graffiti is more like it. I’m a bit too old fashioned for The Cadillac Ranch, I prefer my art to look much as it looked when the artist created it.  I have never been a big fan of graffiti-well, except for Banksy.  I remember visiting the Bridges of Madison County not long after the movie had been released.  The Bridges had…
