Prometheus-In Space, No One Can Hear You Snore

Alien was an amazing movie set in a gritty world where space travel was mundane and the people working for the The Company were more interested in their bonuses than the monster that was loose in the bowels of the ship.  H.R.Giger’s creature and spaceship were perfect, his wonderful mix of machines and organics was made for a sci fi movie project.  Alien was meant to be a one off horror movie that didn’t need to answer any of the countless questions it asked, such as: Why did the ship stop? How did the robot know about the alien? Why…

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2

I’m one of those people who didn’t read the Harry Potter books, but I have enjoyed the movies over the years.  Well, except for those three or four in the middle that didn’t seem to make much sense or advance the plot or even tell an interesting story.  But they were still fun to watch. I always thought that Harry was going to turn out to BE The Dark Lord.  That would have been a great twist, eh? It’s hard not to spill all the secrets and mention in passing that Luke is Darth Vader’s son, that the Maltese Falcon is…

Mildred Pierce on HBO

Kate Winslet does a great job of portraying long suffering, unlucky in love, sharp business woman, and often incredibly dim Depression era damsel Mildred Pierce.  Mildred’s husband leaves her, one of her two daughters dies, and she starts her own business selling her famous pies. Mildred is a proud woman.  Too proud to work as a housekeeper for a super snob and too good to be a lowly waitress.  Until she has no choice and takes a job waiting tables.  One thing leads to another and she starts to sell her pies to local restaurants and then decided to open…

The Family Guy Star Wars Trilogy

Lois (Princess Leia): Aren’t you a little fat to be a stormtrooper? Chris (Luke Skywalker): Well, stay here and rot, you stuck-up bitch! The Family Guy Star Wars stories are pretty much literal translations of the Star Wars movies.  There are countless shot for shot sequences, only with a bit of nitpicking thrown in-such as the fact that Leia seems to be the only woman in the Galaxy and Yoda is pretty much a coward hiding out in his swamp. I was surprised that I got the same kind of feeling from watching these silly little cartoon parodies that I…

Made to Stick

Walking around the library I find my way to the new books shelve and start scanning the titles. It’s the usual suspects, latest bestsellers and graphic novels, stuff for the restless mind that wants to get away from it all. Then there is a book with a fairly convincing bit of duct tape on the cover. Why some ideas survive and others die. Hmm, sounds like my kind book. And it is. Covering everything from the urban legend of the stolen kidney to the success of the Jared Subway commercials, this is really way cool stuff. Ok, saying really way…
