Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

The story of a boy who lost his farther on 9/11.  But that isn’t tragic enough.  The boy has to be autistic. His grandfather has to be a victim of post traumatic stress himself. And the images we see lead us to believe that the boy’s father was one of the jumpers-someone who chose to fall to their death rather than burn alive. 9/11 is the foundation of the story, but the real tale is how our young hero deals with the tragedy.  Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is a fragmented film with lots of flashbacks to both the good old…

Skyfall

James Bond is an old man now.  M is an even older woman.  The good old days of being a spy are gone.  Super Villains just aren’t what they used to be. Skyfall wasn’t too bad, it just wasn’t too great either.  The film opens with a car chase and then has about a five minute long opening credits.  I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw opening credits on a movie.  It was one of countless little flashbacks to the good old days of Bond films. James Bond may be old, but he is standard issue Bond-James Bond. …

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

I liked Mission:Impossible-Ghost Protocol.  The story of four agents duking it out with a Supervillian and a Russian Cop.  Along the way things blow up, people get chased, cars crash, and there are a lot of pretty cool fights.  Ghost Protocol is the kind of movie you walk out of the theater looking for someone to pick a fight with-or someplace to go shoplifting. One of Tom Cruise’s super spy talents is stealing random bits of clothing, cars, phones, and just about anything else he needs from random strangers.  But hey, he does need them.  It’s not like he steals…

Wrecked starring Adrien Brody

Spoilers-Watched the film without knowing anything about it.  It’s best not to even watch the Trailer.  Just get Wrecked and watch it.             The story of a man who finds himself at the bottom of a ravine in a wrecked car.  His leg is pinned under the dashboard.  A man is dead in the back seat, and another person is dead not too far away in the woods. Who is he and how did he get here?  More importantly, how does he get his leg free from the wreckage? Wrecked is pretty much a one…

Slapstick by Kurt Vonnegut

Too many modern books are either parts of a series, or 700 pages long, or both.   Too many classic novels suffer from the same problem, War and Peace and pretty much anything by Dickens is a long term project.  Somewhere along the line a number of writers decided to bang out books that could be read in one or two sittings.  Kurt Vonnegut was one of those writers. Slapstick is another good old fashioned End of The World book-Kurt Vonnegut loves that whole post-Apocalyptic thing.  People die by the millions, nations crumble into ruins, and the Chinese learn to control…

Choke-From The Author of Fight Club

Chokewas written by Chuck Palahniuk, the author of Fight Club, and the film made from that book has that same kind of slightly alternate world view.  Choke is the story of Victor Mancini and his multi-faceted life as a sex addict, an Historical Reenactor, a son, a friend, and a con artist. When we meet Victor he is at a Sex Addicts meeting and instantly hooks up with one of the women in the support group. Our hero, such as he is, works at a place that looks like Williamsburg, Virginia-one those spots where everyone dresses up like it’s 1750…
