The Perfect Employee

Agent Smith loves his job. He sees his job as a mission. He was made for his job. He’s pretty good at what he does. And yet, he doesn’t seem all that happy in his work.
I have been thinking rather a lot about work, as I have been doing little else the past few weeks. I am one of those people that look at what we do and wonder why we don’t do it better. The big wigs that run the show want to know why we don’t do it better as well. But they are also clueless. We take portraits and sell them and then we have profit. But it is never enough profit.
Traveling photographers and traveling sales people are by design a fairly self-contained breed. We can chat people up at a moments notice and then forget they ever existed. I am not one of those photographers that is real talkative and wants to know every bloody detail of your life. My dialog goes more alone the lines of turn this way, turn that way, smile. True it is not the stuff that last bonds of friendship are made, and maybe my lack of great personal contact is a problem. I am not all that sure any more why people buy and why they don’t.
There are a great many books on the topic, lots of NLP tricks and subliminal motions and hints to get people in the right moods. But I am too damned lazy to bother with any of that.
I show up when I am supposed to, most dress as I am supposed to dress, and speak as I am supposed to speak. Like all companies there is a three inch thick notebook filled with rules and regs and do this and don’t do thats. But I am too old now. There comes a time when a person just doesn’t want to play any more. However, short of winning the lotto I have to play.
I am tired, as it was a long day. Lot of driving and lot of pictures taken, though not as many as I have taken in the past. The days are light. Hard to make money on commission with light days. Hard to do much of anything after the heavy days. I keep thinking that I will have to start writing in earnest and make my money from my clever wit. Only, I am not all that clever any more either.
So I will do the best that I can. I will show up on time and try to keep my mouth shut. Well, I will show up on time at any rate.
