Tony Romo-Still The Future of The Dallas Cowboys

Jerry Jones continues to prove that he is a football genius by signing Tony Romoquarterback Tony Romo to a $108 million deal with $55 million guaranteed.   If Tony Romo had won the Superbowl last year, I guess I could understand this decision.   But since Romo is famous for choking in the Big Games, Jerry Jones’ love for Romo remains a bit of a mystery.  Maybe Tony knows where some bodies are buried under the foundations of Jerry World.

Tony Romo in not the new Roger Staubach or Troy Aikman, or even the new Danny White.  Danny White was also a stat monster, but he will never be anything more than a footnote to Dallas Cowboys fans because he didn’t win Super Bowls.  But it’s unfair to compare Romo to White, after all Danny White was 5-5 in the playoffs, including three consecutive trips to the NFC Conference Championship games.  Tony Romo’s playoff record is a little less impressive-one win.

No, Tony Romo remains the new Vinny Testaverde, a quarterback with a few hardcore fans who never reached the heights that he seemed capable of reaching.

Tony Romo lovers like to point out that his playoff stats don’t matter, he is still the best option for the Dallas Cowboys to win.  Who else would they put in his place?  Hmm, how about, oh, ANYONE!

The Romo lovers also like to point out that Tony has played on some pretty lousy teams.  If he had the same offensive line Troy Aikiman had in 1993 or maybe a running back like Tony Dorsett or Emmit Smith in their prime or one of those great Doomsday Defenses, he would have his Super Bowl rings by now.  A Head Coach like Jimmy Johnson or Tom Landry wouldn’t hurt either.  This is like saying General Lee would have won the Civil War if he had Stinger rocket launchers and F-17s.  Well, yeah.

But Tony Romo is not going to have a great team around him any time soon, if ever.  So the argument that he would be a great player in New England, Denver, or Baltimore doesn’t help the Dallas Cowboys.

This is Jerry Jones doing what Jerry Jones is famous for, paying too much for players and keeping them around even when they have not lived up to their potential.

For Tony Romo to be worth his new deal, all he has to do is take the Dallas Cowboys to the Super Bowl for the next five years and win each one.  I’m sure he’s up to the challenge, we all know how good he is when the pressure is on.
